Spirit-Of-Iron (manitou-Pewabic): An Authentic Novel of the North-West Mounted Police

Before the red serge became iconic, there was the North-West Mounted Police, a handful of men holding law over a wilderness. Harwood Steele's 1923 novel follows Hector Adair, a young man forged by military tradition and shadowed by personal tragedy, as he departs Lower Fort Garry to become a constable. Born in Upper Canada with a sister he lost to devastation, Hector carries both ambition and grief into the untamed frontier. The story traces his metamorphosis from eager recruit into the spirit of the force itself, as he forges bonds with fellow officers and grapples with the crushing weight of responsibility in a land where civilization is thin and danger is constant. Steele renders the pioneer period with visceral authenticity: the brutal winters, the sprawling emptiness, the fragile settlements where a single mounted policeman represents order itself. This is a novel about becoming, becoming a man, becoming a symbol, becoming part of the legend that would eventually birth the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. It endures for readers who crave frontier narratives with real emotional stakes, and for anyone curious about the rough origins of Canadian identity.
