'smiles': A Rose of the Cumberlands

A city doctor loses himself in the Appalachian woods and finds something he never expected: a young girl with a nickname that says it all. Donald MacDonald, a polished children's physician, stumbles into the Cumberlands exhausted, humiliated, and thoroughly unprepared for the wilderness. Instead of rescue, he discovers Rose, a mountain child tending her own injured foot, whose sweet nature and infectious warmth transform his misadventure into the beginning of something unexpected. Robinson writes with earnest sentiment about the collision between sophistication and simplicity, between a man whose life has been built on learning and a girl whose world is made of different things. What follows is a gentle story of connection across vast differences, as the city learns something from the country, and the healer discovers he has much to be healed of himself. For readers who long for a slower pace and softer world, 'smiles' offers a window into rural Appalachia at its most picturesque, where kindness is currency and a single smile can change everything.
