Shadows in Zamboula

Conan arrives in Zamboula at dusk, and by midnight he understands why travelers fear this desert city. The tavern of Aram Baksh seems like refuge, but its walls hide horror, previous guests have vanished into the night, fed to the Dafari slaves who roam the streets in packs. When Conan uncovers the truth, he must battle through darkness against a treacherous priest and a fearsome strangler named Baal-Pteor, one of the few humans in all the stories who can match him in strength. This is Conan stripped of allies and titles, surviving on instinct and iron through a single night of relentless danger. Howard wrote this in 1935 as pure pulp, and it shows: the atmosphere drips sweat and menace, every shadow conceals a blade, and the Cimmerian must think as fast as he fights to see dawn. It endures because it's Conan at his most elemental, not a king or hero, just a man with a sword trying not to become someone's dinner.
