Rome

Rome is the second novel in Zola's epic "Three Cities" trilogy, following the failed pilgrimage of Lourdes. Here, we meet Abbé Pierre Froment, a young French priest who arrives in the Eternal City bearing an audacious dream: to convince the Vatican to authorize a new religious order dedicated to radical social action, feeding the hungry, sheltering the poor, healing a church that has grown fat on suffering. What he finds is a labyrinth of bureaucratic indifference, political intrigue, and spiritual calcification. The Vatican of 1869 is more concerned with maintaining its temporal power than answering the cries of the suffering. Zola paints the Church as both magnificent and morally bankrupt, a body that preserves its treasures while its faithful starve. Yet Pierre's journey is not nihilistic; it points toward a religion of works, of direct action, of redemption through helping others. This is Zola at his most ambitious: a novel about the collision between ideal and institution, between the Jesus who fed the multitudes and the Church that counts its coins.
