Rodamour finally receives a coveted invitation; however, just as he prepares for a night of glory, the dinner is abruptly canceled, leading to his public humiliation and deepening his feeling of isolation. This opening sets a comedic yet poignant tone, highlighting the themes of desire, social ambition, and the often-cruel reality of human relationships.
