Regenta (Tomo I)
La Regenta, written by Leopoldo García-Alas and published in 1884, is considered one of the most significant Spanish novels of the 19th century, often compared to Don Quixote. The story unfolds in the fictional city of Vetusta and centers on Doña Ana Ozores, a beautiful but unattainable woman trapped in a dull marriage. The novel intricately explores themes of desire, virtue, and societal expectations through the rivalry between Don Álvaro Mesía and the clergyman Don Fermín de Pas for Ana's affection. This first volume covers the initial three days of the narrative, introducing a rich cast of over 100 characters and the complex social dynamics of Vetusta.
