Rautatie

In a small Finnish homestead buried in deep woods, an aging couple named Matti and Liisa have heard whispers about something extraordinary: a railroad, coming through their remote corner of the world. They have never seen one. No one in their village has. Yet the railroad is real, and it will change everything. Through overheard conversations with the priest and the drunken peasant Ville, through rumors carried on the wind, Matti and Liisa construct elaborate fantasies about what this 'rautatie' might be. Is it a road made of iron? A fire that runs on wood? Does it eat people? The novel follows their small, quiet days as they try to imagine the incomprehensible, their attempts as charmingly futile as they are poignant. Juhani Aho captures something universal in this 1884 masterpiece: the strange vertigo of ordinary people suddenly confronted by progress, the loneliness of being left behind while the world rushes forward. It is a tiny, perfect book about big things, and its gentle humor and tender observation have kept it alive for over a century.
