Rampolli
1897
George MacDonald was never content with mere accuracy in translation. In this 1897 collection, he attempts something more perilous: carrying the soul of German Romanticism across the linguistic divide. The translations here don't just render Novalis, Schiller, Goethe, and Heine into English, they resurrect their spirits, their yearning, their mystical embrace of night and darkness as pathways to deeper truth. The opening "Hymns to the Night" sequence is particularly transcendent, treating darkness not as absence but as revelation. But Rampolli is no mere act of literary archaeology. Interspersed among these translations are MacDonald's own "Year's Diary of an Old Soul," originally published as "A Book of Strife" in 1880. These are poems of spiritual struggle and surrender, the daily wrestling of a deeply religious consciousness with faith, doubt, and longing. For readers who find sustenance in luminous, meditative verse that explores the profound connection between darkness and divine understanding, this volume offers a rare and intimate encounter.
