Prometheus Bound

The play opens on a god in agony. Prometheus, who dared to steal fire from Olympus and give it to mankind, has been chained to a desolate rock by order of Zeus. His flesh is torn, his eagle feeds on his immortal liver each day only for it to regenerate so the torment can begin again. Yet through his suffering, Prometheus remains defiant. He possesses a secret - knowledge of a future catastrophe that will bring Zeus down from his throne - and he refuses to speak, refuses to break. The Oceanids arrive to mourn with him; Oceanus urges submission; Hermes arrives demanding he reveal his secret. Prometheus will not yield. This is theater as pure confrontation: one man against the machinery of divine tyranny, his body the battlefield for ideas about power, justice, and the cost of compassion. Written around 450 BCE, it remains the foundational text of rebellion against unjust authority.
