Principia Ethica

G. E. Moore's *Principia Ethica* isn't just a book; it's a gauntlet thrown at the feet of traditional ethics. Moore famously argues that "good" is an indefinable, simple quality, like the color yellow—you know it when you see it, but you can't break it down further. To attempt to define good in terms of natural properties (like pleasure, or survival) is, for Moore, to commit the "naturalistic fallacy," a foundational error that derails most ethical systems. He systematically dismantles the arguments of everyone from Mill and Spencer to Kant and Spinoza, exposing how they all, in his view, fall prey to this very fallacy. Only after clearing this philosophical debris does Moore begin to build his own ethical framework, asserting that the right action is the one that produces the most good, with intrinsic value found primarily in aesthetic experiences and personal relationships.
