Pick a Crime

Pick a Crime

Richard Rein Smith

American Literature, Novels, Science-Fiction & Fantasy

In a world where crime has been conquered, being labeled a criminal is the only way to become a person. Joe Harper carries the designation DCT, Dangerous Criminal Tendencies, and with it comes a lifetime of exclusion. No job will touch him. No one will trust him. The system that eliminated crime doesn't punish offenders; it simply removes the impulse to transgress through treatment, leaving them docile, compliant, and hollow. So Joe devises a plan as twisted as the society that spawned it: he will commit a crime, get caught, and earn his rehabilitation. The robbery goes exactly as poorly as intended. The treatment works. But the man who emerges is no longer Joe, and the victory of a crime-free society reveals itself as something far more sinister than justice. This is a chilling, mid-century precursor to A Clockwork Orange, a razor-sharp interrogation of whether a society that erases deviance has actually erased something far more precious: the self.
