Peter Parley's Annual, 1855: A Christmas and New Year's Present for Young People

A portal to Victorian childhood, this 1855 Christmas annual wraps adventure, history, and poetry into one festive package. Peter Parley, the warm-hearted pseudonym guiding young readers through these pages, greets his audience with genuine cheer, inviting them into stories of bold adventurers, unexpected journeys, and curious historical figures like Cardinal Wolsey. Whimsical poems sit alongside tales that teach without preaching, blending entertainment with the moral instruction Victorians treasured. The collection pulses with curiosity about the wider world: distant lands, ancient universities, the workings of nature. What makes this annual enduring is its fundamental warmth, the sense of a grown-up reaching out across time to say to a child: here is something wonderful. For readers who romanticize the crackle of fireplaces and the hush of a snow-bound afternoon, for those who want to understand what nineteenth-century children read and dreamed about, this is a genuine artifact of childhood pleasure.
