Pasarse De Listo

Don Braulio is a man destroyed not by his wife's infidelity but by his own paranoid imagination. Married to a woman far younger than himself, he becomes convinced she must be unfaithful, after all, he is old and ugly, while the dashing Conde de Alhedín clearly pursues her. The bitter irony? The affair exists only in Don Braulio's tormented mind. His wife and the Conde exchange nothing more than innocent flirtation, yet his jealousy spirals into obsessive certainty. Juan Valera, writing with the sophisticated wit that made him a darling of Spanish intellectual circles, transforms a simple tale of romantic intrigue into a sharp psychological dissection of vanity, self-deception, and the aristocratic class's obsession with appearances. The novel asks: what happens when a man's own insecurities become his greatest enemy? The answer is as funny as it is tragic.
