Out of the Depths: A Romance of Reclamation

Lafayette Ashton arrives in the American West with expensive gear, refined manners, and absolutely no idea what he's doing. A wealthy city man with a passion for hunting but zero experience, he makes a spectacular fool of himself by shooting a yearling calf instead of a deer, setting off a chain of events that strands him at the Knowles ranch. Here he encounters Isobel 'Chuckie' Knowles, a spirited rancher's daughter who sees through his pretensions immediately yet finds herself drawn to his genuine desire to change. As Ashton fends off the suspicions of ranch hands Knowles and Gowan, trading barbed banter for honest labor, he begins the slow work of rebuilding himself from whatever's left after his privileged façade crumbles. The West becomes both adversary and healer in this 1913 romance, where a man must lose everything he thought he was before he can become someone worth being. It's a product of its era, certainly, with all the gendered expectations and romantic formulas that implies, but it captures something real about the fantasy of reinvention that still pulls people toward frontier mythology.
