Original stories from real life

Before Mary Wollstonecraft wrote the foundational text of feminist philosophy, she wrote this radical book for children. Published in 1788, "Original Stories from Real Life" follows two orphaned sisters, Mary and Caroline, sent to live with their aunt Mrs. Mason after their mother's death. The girls arrive wild, selfish, and ungoverned. What follows is neither punishment nor rote memorization but something rarer: a compassionate adult appealing to their reason, using story and conversation to cultivate virtue and self-awareness. Wollstonecraft believed children could grasp abstract truths if presented clearly, and her tutor models an entirely new kind of authority, one built on patience and respect rather than fear. This is Wollstonecraft's educational philosophy in miniature, and it still challenges our assumptions about how children learn to be good. The book endures because it treats its young readers as capable of thought, not merely recipients of instruction.
