Old House
At seventy, Christopher Ulwing returns to the house he built thirty years ago, now called the Old House by everyone but him. His son John Hubert wants nothing to do with the restoration; only Anne, his granddaughter, asks the questions that force Christopher to remember. As he tears down walls and uncovers what time has buried, Hungary itself is coming apart. Revolution shatters the old order. The kingdom collapses. A new republic rises from the ruins. Around Christopher, the world he knew is being erased room by room, just like the house. This is a novel about what we inherit and what we escape, about the buildings we construct to contain our secrets and the weight of finally having to live inside them again.
