Off Duty: A Dozen Yarns for Soldiers and Sailors

Shortly after the Great War, a librarian at Camp Pelham Bay gathered these twelve stories for soldiers and sailors still learning to live with what they'd seen. She knew the men needed something simple: tales that didn't ask them to reckon with the war directly, but let them laugh again, dream of adventure, remember what civilian life felt like before everything changed. The result is an anthology that moves from comic misadventures, like a father's comical struggle to keep up with his educated daughter in Irving Bacheller's 'Keeping Up With Lizzie', to more stirring portraits of men confronting duty, loss, and what home means when you've been so far from it. Rex Beach contributes his characteristic grit. Other hands add warmth. The collection holds no pretense of high art; it doesn't need to. These are honest entertainments, the kind of story a man might read in a barracks after lights out, or between trains on the way back to wherever he's trying to become himself again. For modern readers, the book offers something rare: a window into how ordinary people coped with extraordinary times, and a reminder that sometimes the greatest stories are the ones that simply let you breathe.
