Octopus
Frank Norris's 1901 novel 'The Octopus: A Story of California' is based on the Mussel Slough Tragedy of 1880, which involved a violent conflict between ranchers and the Southern Pacific Railroad over land ownership. The story illustrates the struggles of farmers who had leased land from the railroad, only to face rising prices and attempts by the railroad to reclaim the land. This work is notable for its exploration of the impact of corporate power on individual lives and is considered a significant early example of American naturalism.
