The Octopus
In the sun-baked expanse of California's San Joaquin Valley, a sprawling network of wheat farms becomes the battleground for a desperate struggle against an omnipresent, insatiable power: the railroad monopoly. Frank Norris plunges us into the lives of the determined farmers, united in their Farmer's League, as they fight tooth and nail to retain the land they've toiled over for years. With the railroad company — a monstrous 'octopus' with tentacles reaching into every aspect of their lives — threatening exorbitant shipping rates, eviction, and outright theft, the conflict escalates from political maneuvering and legal battles to a violent, irreversible climax. It's a gripping, visceral portrayal of man versus machine, individual will against corporate might.
