New Bodies for Old

Nicolas Vermont receives a cryptic letter from a reclusive uncle he's never met: come alone, and give notice. When he arrives at the remote estate of Fonval, he finds his Uncle Lerne conducting experiments that defy the boundaries of science and morality. The old man has developed a technique for transferring human consciousness into new bodies, and he wants Nicolas to understand, to witness, perhaps to inherit his work. What follows is a unsettling meditation on identity: if your mind inhabits flesh that was once someone else's, are you still you? Renard, writing in 1920s France, constructs a haunting precursor to modern body-swap narratives and cyberpunk anxieties, but his real interest lies in the philosophical vertigo of selfhood. The prose carries an eerie calm, like a doctor delivering a diagnosis. This is early science fiction at its most provocative: less interested in ray guns and space travel than in the terrifying freedom of becoming someone else.
