Nappy Has a New Friend

This 1947 picture book captures something rare for its era: an interracial friendship between children portrayed with warmth and simplicity. When young Nappy meets Tommy at the local dump while searching for treasures, neither boy sees race, they see a fellow adventurer. Their friendship sparks a neighborhood spectacle as they rally Nappy's sister and other local kids to stage an elaborate show in an old barn. The talents emerge organically: dancing twins, a raccoon trained to perform tricks, each child contributing what they can. The book pulses with the joy of collaboration and the particular magic of childhood summers spent building something with friends. It carries historical weight as one of the earlier children's books depicting interracial friendship, though modern readers will note dated elements that reflect its era. The story's heart lies in its simplicity: friendship, imagination, and the satisfaction of creating something together.
