Adventure, British Literature

What begins as a young Englishman's quest for vengeance becomes something far grander and more tragic: the chronicle of an empire's fall. Thomas Wingfield loses his mother to a Spanish butcher and dedicates his life to hunting down her killer. But in pursuing revenge across 16th-century Mexico, he finds himself entangled with the Aztec royal family itself, falling in love with Montezuma's daughter and building a life among people who regard him with suspicion and wonder in equal measure. The novel follows Thomas through decades of adventure, love, and loss as he witnesses the Spanish conquest from both sides, an outsider who has gone native, a husband divided between two worlds. The final act delivers one of Victorian literature's most devastating portraits of civilization collapsing: Tenochtitlan falling to Cortéz's forces, the emperor dead, a world ending. Haggard wrote this novel in the shadow of his own unbearable loss (his son died while Haggard was researching in Mexico), and that grief infuses every page with a melancholy weight that elevates the adventure into something genuinely moving.

“Youth is prone to reason by large leaps as it were, and to hold that all things are false because some are proved false; and thus at times in those days I thought that there was no God, because the priest said that the image of the Virgin at Bungay wept and did other things which I knew that it did not do. Now I know well that there is a God, for my own story proves it to my heart. In truth, what man can look back across a long life and say that there is no God, when he can see the shadow of His hand lying deep upon his tale of years?””

— H. Rider Haggard

“Thus then did I accomplish the vengeance that I had sworn to my father I would wreak upon de Garcia, or rather, thus did I witness its accomplishment, for in the end he died, terribly enough, not by my hand but by those of his own fears. Since then I have sorrowed for this, for, when the frozen and unnatural calm passed from my mind, I hated him as bitterly as ever, and grieved that I let him die otherwise than by my hand, and to this hour such is my mind towards him. Doubtless, many may think it wicked, since we are taught to forgive our enemies, but here I leave the forgiveness to God, for how can I pardon one who betrayed my father to the priests, who murdered my mother and my son, who chained me in the slave-ship and for many hours tortured me with his own hand? Rather, year by year, do I hate him more. I write of this at some length, since the matter has been a trouble to me. I never could say that I was in charity with all men living and dead, and because of this, some years since, a worthy and learned rector of this parish took upon himself to refuse me the rites of the church. Then I went to the bishop and laid the story before him, and it puzzled him somewhat.””

— H. Rider Haggard

“Fool!' answered the lady again, 'does fire die from lack of fuel only, and must every man live till age takes him? We shall escape them thus,' and casting down the torch she carried, she trod it into the earth with her sandal, and went on with her load.””

— H. Rider Haggard

“Heart to heart, Though far apart.””

— H. Rider Haggard

“It is a common jest to mock at early love, but if it be real, if it be something more than the mere arising of the passions, early love is late love also; it is love for ever, the best and worst event which can befall a man or woman. I say it who am old and who have done with everything, and it is true.””

— H. Rider Haggard
