To detail the contrasts between the cultures of ancient Germans and the Romans as well as to reflect on the implications of these differences for contemporary society. In this work, Tacitus describes various aspects of Germanic life, including their religious beliefs, warrior culture, family structures, and communal practices. He highlights the simplicity and rusticity of their mores, noting how they often lack the luxuries and complexities found in Roman society. The text discusses the importance of bravery and honor in warfare, the role of women in both domestic and military contexts, and the very egalitarian nature of their communities, which contrasts sharply with Roman hierarchical structures. Tacitus also draws parallels between the customs of the Germans and those of the then-modern Franks and Gauls, elucidating a continuity of cultural traits across time and geographical boundaries.
