Messer Marco Polo

The novel opens on the first night of spring in Venice, where young Marco Polo stands at a window watching the city come alive, a man caught between his family's legacy and an unshakeable hunger for the distant East. He has never seen Golden Bells, the daughter of Kublai Khan whose name has become synonymous with everything beautiful and unattainable, but he loves her already with a love built from longing and imagination. When he finally departs Venice, his journey becomes both geographic passage and spiritual quest, rendered through the voice of Malachi of the Glens, an old Ulster storyteller whose brogue and wild invention transform history into something richer than fact. The prose moves like a tapestry, heavy with the ivory and peacocks and strange perfumes of medieval trade routes, yet beneath its sweetness runs an undercurrent of cosmic terror, the stars whistling and clanging as they pass. This is not merely a romance about winning a khan's daughter; it is a meditation on what it means to love someone you have never met, and how the story we tell ourselves about our own desire becomes the story that shapes our destiny.
