Mary Jane Down South

Mary Jane is nine years old, and she has never been anywhere. So when her family announces a trip to the American South, to Florida, where the palm trees sway and alligators lurk in waterways, she can barely contain herself. The novel captures the electric anticipation of a child encountering the wider world: the last-minute packing, the noisy railway station, the thrill of watching unfamiliar landscapes scroll past the window. Along with her sister Alice, Mary Jane collects wonders like other children collect marbles, cypress swamps, strange birds, the flat-out shock of seeing an alligator for the first time. Written in 1919, this is a time capsule wrapped in adventure, showing travel as it once was: an event, a transformation, a genuine departure from the ordinary. The girls' conversations crackle with sibling intimacy, their questions unguarded and sincere. For readers who love the unhurried pleasure of old-fashioned children's stories, or anyone curious about what childhood looked like a century ago.
