Mae Madden

Mae Madden boards an ocean steamer bound for Italy, and in that moment, she embodies every restless Victorian daughter who has ever gazed at the horizon and wondered what lies beyond the shores of propriety. Mason's 1875 novel follows this spirited young woman as she traverses the sun-drenched cities of Italy with her family, encountering adventures, romantic entanglements, and the intoxicating possibility of freedom. Mae's conversations with her brothers and potential suitors reveal a woman caught between the safe expectations of society and her own yearning for excitement and self-determination. The Italian landscape becomes more than backdrop; it is a mirror for Mae's internal revolution. Though the novel adheres to Victorian conventions, there is genuine energy in Mae's defiance, in her refusal to be simply decorous. For readers who cherish rediscovered Victorian novels, stories of women who dare to want more, and the eternal lure of Italy, this novel offers a glimpse into an overlooked work of its era.
