The novel builds toward the iconic burning of Carthage, its people sold into slavery, its very salt being sown into the earth so nothing might ever grow there again. What makes this book endure is not its politics but its grief. Church writes with genuine sorrow for what Rome destroyed: a cosmopolitan world of Phoenician trade, Greek philosophy, Carthaginian enterprise.
