Lolly Willowes

Laura Willowes, a spinster of quiet disposition, has always been the dutiful "Aunt Lolly" to her domineering family. After decades of being relegated to the role of unpaid domestic help, she experiences a sudden, inexplicable urge to escape. She decamps to the seemingly idyllic village of Great Mop, much to the horror of her relatives who have long controlled her life and finances. There, Laura finally begins to taste true independence, only to discover that Great Mop holds a secret far stranger than her family's disapproval: a coven of witches, and a very charming devil, who offer her a different kind of belonging. Sylvia Townsend Warner's 1926 debut is a deliciously subversive fable, couching a radical feminist declaration in the guise of a whimsical, darkly humorous fantasy. It's a sharp-witted critique of societal expectations for women, particularly unmarried ones, and a celebration of self-ownership and unconventional freedom. Warner's prose is elegant and witty, brimming with understated charm and a mischievous gleam that makes Lolly's journey from domestic servitude to satanic pact feel not just logical, but utterly liberating. This isn't just a story about witches; it's about the magic of choosing your own life, even if it means consorting with the devil himself.
