The opening of ''Little Folks'' introduces readers to the plight of Elsie and her younger brother, Duncan, who awaken after a troubled night at a crofter's cottage. With their clothes missing and breakfast scant, they are reluctantly ordered to work for Mrs. Ferguson, who seems to have no intention of letting them leave.
