Life and Adventures of Calamity Jane

A raw, unpolished autobiography from the legend herself. Calamity Jane, born Martha Cannary, writes in her own blunt voice about riding across the frontier, scouting for General Custer, and crossing paths with Wild Bill Hickok. There's no romantic padding here. She tells it like she lived it: the brutal winters, the deadly missions, the particular freedom of being a woman who could ride like hell and shoot straighter than most men she met. Originally published in 1896, this is less a polished memoir than a straight-talking account from someone who was there. She writes about her childhood in Missouri, the grueling journey westward to Montana with her family, and her eventual settle-down after years of frontier life. What emerges is not the folk heroine of dime novels, but a real woman with a genuine voice. Essential reading for anyone who wants the Wild West as those who actually lived it remembered it.
