Le Roman Bourgeois: Ouvrage Comique

Furetière opens his novel with a provocation: he will not invoke the muse, describe the moon, or recount the genealogy of his characters. Why bother? His heroes are ordinary Parisian bourgeois, not princes. Published in 1666, Le Roman Bourgeois stands as aaudacious rejection of literary pretension. Instead of nobles and heroes, Furetière gives us Nicodème, a provincial lawyer navigating the absurd social rituals of Paris, and Javotte, a young woman whose romantic prospects depend on negotiations conducted between matchmaking mothers. The plot unfolds at the Place Maubert, where misunderstandings multiply and courtships stumble forward with all the grace of a badly choreographed dance. Furetière's wit is his weapon: he skewers the bourgeois obsession with money, status, and appearances while simultaneously mocking the literary conventions that demand heroes be born of kings. The result is a book that knows exactly what it is, a comedy about unremarkable people, and wears that ordinariness as a badge of rebellion. It is scatterbrained, deliberately so, andfunnier for it.
