Adventure, American Literature, Novels

A young woman named Kate boards a train into the American West, carrying nothing but a name she's never spoken aloud and a father she's never met. Barb Doubleday is a rancher with a checkered reputation, a man more comfortable with cattle than conversation. When Kate arrives in Sleepy Cat, she must cross a raging river, survive a night of wild weather, and ride into a life entirely foreign to everything she's known. At Doubleday's ranch, she finds a father who is stranger than the land itself, and a world where everyone has something to hide. Jim Laramie, a mysterious rider with connections that cut deeper than canyons, watches her arrival with interests of his own, his past and purposes remain as obscured as the Montana sky before a storm. This is a novel about what it means to arrive somewhere that doesn't want you, to stake a claim in territory where belonging must be fought for rather than inherited. Spearman writes the railroad West at its twilight, when the old ways are dying but haven't yet surrendered, populated by rustlers, dreamers, and men who measure their lives in horseflesh and hard miles. The romance here isn't soft, it's the fierce, dangerous business of building a life from nothing in hard country. For readers who love Westerns with real emotional stakes, for anyone who has ever traveled toward a stranger bearing the same blood.
