Journal of Voyages: Containing an Account of the Author's Being Twice Captured by the English and Once by Gibbs the Pirate...

In the血and era of the early 1800s, Jacob Dunham signed aboard a sloop called Rover and embarked on a life that would shatter any romantic notions of seafaring. Within months, the War of 1812 dragged him into a nightmare: he was captured by the British, imprisoned, paroled, then captured again. But the Crown's prisons weren't the worst thing waiting on those waters. A third capture came from Gibbs the Pirate, whose crew held Dunham for weeks before his eventual escape. This memoir is what he brought back from the dead. Dunham writes not as a hero but as a survivor, recounting the daily brutality of maritime trade, the terror of blockades, and the strange, charged encounters with indigenous communities in the Caribbean and Central America. His prose has no interest in embellishment. He tells what happened, how he lived, and what it cost. The result is an artifact from a vanished world, one man's stubborn refusal to let his story be forgotten. For readers hungry for true adventure untainted by nostalgia, this memoir offers something rare: proof that the worst seas produce the best stories.
