Jack, the Fire Dog

There's something irreducibly brave about a dog who runs toward fire. Jack, the fire dog of Engine 33, has never shied from a call. In the early 1900s, when horse-drawn engines clatter through cobblestone streets and brass gleams like captured sunlight, Jack lives among firefighters who are less coworkers than family. When the alarm sounds on a bitter winter night, Jack springs into action alongside them, responding to a fire at a neighborhood theater that quickly spreads to adjacent tenements. In the smoke-choked building, Jack finds something that changes everything: William, a blind boy trapped and alone. What follows is a rescue that transforms a courageous fire dog into something like legend. This is a story about what animals and humans can become to each other, and the kind of bravery that has nothing to do with size.
