In the Irish Brigade: A Tale of War in Flanders and Spain
1900
It is the early 18th century, and Ireland lies crushed under English rule. For Catholic Irishmen, there is no home to fight for. So they fight elsewhere. Desmond Kennedy, a young man of noble Stuart blood, commissions into O'Brien's regiment of the famed Irish Brigade, serving a foreign king in Flanders and Spain. But every battle fought for France is also a battle against the memory of a homeland that rejected them. Henty crafts a tale where loyalty becomes a labyrinth: to the Stuart cause, to the brothers-in-arms who share your exile, to the French officers who pay your sword. The novel crackles with the discontent of men who left Ireland not because they abandoned her, but because she had nothing left to give them. As Desmond rises through the ranks, he must navigate political intrigue, battlefield carnage, and the quiet grief of men who will never return home. This is adventure with a shadow over it, the story of soldiers who became legends in foreign wars while their own country waited, unspoken for, in the dark.
