In the Arctic Seas: A Narrative of the Discovery of the Fate of Sir John Franklin and His Companions

In 1845, Sir John Franklin and 128 men vanished while searching for the Northwest Passage. For over a decade, their fate remained one of history's most haunting mysteries. In 1857, Lady Jane Franklin, refusing to accept her husband's death, sponsored one final expedition aboard the steam yacht Fox. Captain Francis Leopold McClintock, a seasoned Arctic veteran, led a crew of twenty-five into the frozen unknown. For two years they battled crushing ice, brutal winters, and endless Arctic night. When McClintock finally reached King William Island, he discovered a cairn at Victory Point containing a single note: Franklin had died in 1847, and his surviving crew had perished in a desperate retreat southward. The note was the first definitive proof of the expedition's tragic end. Written by the man who solved the mystery himself, this is both a thrilling adventure narrative and a haunting meditation on exploration's human cost.
