Imogen; Or, Only Eighteen

Mrs. Molesworth

1892

At eighteen, Imogen arrives at Grey Fells Hall prepared to find friends wherever she goes. Her mother, Mrs. Wentworth, has brought them to stay with the Helmont family, and from the moment the Wentworths cross the threshold, things go delightfully awry. Imogen's openness and warmth collide with the snobbery of young Trixie Helmont, who certainly does not welcome an outsider into her circle. Yet Imogen refuses to be dimmed by cold shoulders. She simply persists in being herself: cheerful, unpretentious, genuinely kind. The Helmont sisters are a study in contrasts. Florence, the eldest, has the grace Trixie lacks, while Mabella watches with her own quiet envy. As misunderstandings accumulate and social fences rise, Imogen navigates it all with a stubborn gentleness that slowly, surely, begins to thaw the frostiest reception. Mrs. Molesworth writes with the knowing wit of someone who understands exactly how ridiculous class pretension can be, while never losing her affection for any of her characters. This is a small, warm novel about the quiet victory of remaining good-natured in the face of small-mindedness.
