Hymns from the German: Translated by Frances Elizabeth Cox

In the mid-19th century, Frances Elizabeth Cox undertook a quiet act of literary devotion: bringing German sacred poetry out of obscurity and into English. These hymns had been sung in churches and homes across Germany for generations, their verses passed down as treasures of faith, yet they had never before reached English-speaking readers. Cox presented each hymn in both German and English, preserving the original language while offering her translations to the faithful abroad. The collection spans expressions of gratitude, hope, divine protection, and wonder at the natural world. Some hymns ring with bold confidence in God's providence; others breathe a quieter, more penitential spirituality. Together, they paint a portrait of 19th-century Protestant devotion at its most heartfelt, drawing from poets whose names have faded but whose words once moved congregations. What emerges is more than a historical curiosity. These are hymns meant to be sung, and Cox's translations aim to preserve not just meaning but musicality. For readers interested in hymnody, Victorian translation practices, or the transatlantic flow of devotional poetry, this collection offers a window into a tradition that influenced everything from Sunday school songs to the great Anglican hymnals.
