Hopes and Fears for Art

William Morris delivered these lectures in the 1880s, during the height of industrial transformation, and they crackle with urgent conviction. He makes the case that art must not remain the province of elites, locked in galleries and grand buildings for the wealthy to admire. Instead, beauty should flood into everyday objects: the cup you drink from, the fabric you wear, the walls you inhabit. Morris argues that the so-called "lesser" decorative arts are not lesser at all, but rather the arts most people actually experience throughout their lives. He sees the divorce of art from labor as a fundamental wound in modern society, and he insists that meaningful work itself is essential to human dignity. When we create beautiful things, we affirm our humanity. Though Morris acknowledges the grim present of factory work and aesthetic decline, he remainsstubbornly hopeful that art can regenerate civilization if workers are allowed to take pride in their making. This is Morris at his most prophetic, arguing that a society's soul can be measured by the beauty of its ordinary objects.
