Honey-Sweet

The steamship Caronia departs with twelve-year-old Anne Lewis on board, her uncle Carey at her side - though his mind is clearly elsewhere. A hurried messenger, a mysterious letter, and then her uncle simply disappears into the ship's labyrinthine corridors. Anne is alone now, an orphan in all but name, navigating a voyage that has suddenly transformed from adventure into something far more precarious. What follows is a quiet, affecting tale of resilience. Anne must learn to read the intentions of strangers, to ask for help when pride screams against it, and to find her footing in a world that demands she grow up faster than she expected. Fellow passengers Miss Drayton and Mrs. Patterson become her anchors, offering the belonging she desperately seeks while her uncle's absence remains a wound that refuses to close. Written in 1916, this is children's fiction at its most honest - recognizing that young readers understand loss, fear, and the terrifying freedom of being truly on your own. It's a story about discovering that even when the people we love vanish, the world can still hold us.
