Heroes in Peace: The 6th William Penn Lecture, May 9, 1920

Delivered in the spring of 1920, as the world still grappled with the aftermath of the Great War, this William Penn Lecture presents a radical challenge to everything society had been taught to believe about courage and heroism. Minister and activist John Haynes Holmes argues that while soldiers demonstrate undeniable bravery, a more profound and selfless heroism exists in the daily struggles of ordinary people: the peacemakers facing ridicule, the pioneers laboring in isolation, the reformers toiling for justice without recognition or reward. Holmes critiques a culture that celebrates destruction while ignoring those who build, heal, and persist quietly. This is philosophy rooted in its historical moment yet striking a remarkably contemporary chord, asking readers to reconsider what it truly means to be heroic and why society so consistently looks in the wrong direction for its idols. For anyone interested in American intellectual history, pacifist philosophy, or the ongoing cultural conversation about war and peace.
