Hell on Ice: The Saga of the "Jeannette

Hell on Ice: The Saga of the 'Jeannette' is a historical account by Edward Ellsberg, first published in 1938. It chronicles the ill-fated 1879-1881 expedition of the USS Jeannette, led by Captain George Washington De Long, as they attempted to reach the North Pole. The narrative combines fictional elements with historical facts, highlighting the crew's struggles against the harsh Arctic environment and reflecting on themes of human endurance and exploration. The book also features the reflections of George Wallace Melville, the ship's engineer-in-chief, who recalls the expedition's tragic events.
