Harry Blount, the Detective; Or, The Martin Mystery Solved

Published in 1891, a full year before Conan Doyle gave the world Sherlock Holmes, Harry Blount represents a fascinating artifact from the earliest days of detective fiction. When Mr. Stafford receives a mysterious letter that threatens his family's future, he discovers his daughter Kate has been secretly betrothed to a man she has never met. But as Harry Blount investigates the tangled web of engagements, financial distress, and dark family secrets, a drowning accident and hints of murder sharpen the stakes. The story follows Harry Hall and the enigmatic Richard Martin, whose heroic rescue of Kate from watery death only deepens the mystery surrounding him. This is a Victorian puzzle box: romances contracted in secret, fortunes hanging in the balance, and a detective whose methodical mind picks apart lies to find ugly truths. For readers curious about where detective fiction began, or for those who enjoy atmospheric period mysteries with all the formal dress and hushed drawing-room intrigue the genre once demanded.
