Harper's Young People, 1880 Index: An Illustrated Weekly

This index opens a window into the imagination of Victorian-era children. Harper's Young People was a lavishly illustrated weekly that mixed adventure tales, historical sketches, and educational pieces into a stew meant to entertain and improve its young readers. Here you'll find the brave Swiss boy alongside accounts of American naval heroics, nature studies, and geography lessons disguised as entertainment. The publication reflected what late 19th century parents and educators believed children should know: moral courage, world geography, national pride, and the wonder of the natural world. For modern readers, this index serves as a time capsule, cataloging exactly what stories and illustrations filled the minds of children over a century ago. It also functions as a key to the full archives, allowing the curious to hunt down specific tales of exploration, animal stories, and the kind of wholesome adventure that defined Victorian childhood reading.
