Harper's Round Table, June 2, 1896

A window into late Victorian childhood, this 1896 issue of Harper's Round Table delivers exactly what turn-of-the-century young readers craved: adventure, danger, and moral instruction wrapped in entertaining prose. The centerpiece follows fourteen-year-old Cristobal Nunez, imprisoned in Havana's formidable Morro Castle, separated from his young sister alone in a war-torn land. An elderly fellow prisoner offers what comfort he can, suggesting hope may come through the boy's resourceful sibling. The story captures the era's faith in youthful ingenuity while exploring the raw emotional terrain of family separated by conflict. Beyond this central tale, the magazine offers a curated mix of stories, articles, and illustrations designed to both entertain and edify its young audience. For readers curious about how children of another century were told stories, or anyone drawn to historical fiction set against the dramatic backdrop of Cuban independence, this periodical offers an authentic glimpse into a vanished literary world.
