Harper's Round Table, January 14, 1896

A vivid snapshot of late Victorian childhood entertainment, this 1896 issue of Harper's Round Table delivers exactly what its young readership craved: adventure, moral instruction, and escape. The centerpiece is "For King or Country," a Revolutionary War tale that casts readers into the dangerous world of espionage through George, a lieutenant forced to operate behind British lines under the alias Richard Blount. His tense mission delivering crucial messages becomes a meditation on courage, loyalty, and the terrible weight of secrets, recalling Nathan Hale's fate at every dangerous turn. Beyond the fiction, this issue offers a fascinating time capsule: articles on scientific wonders of the era, practical advice for young gentlemen, puzzles that twist the mind, and poems that grandly extol virtue. The illustrations bring everything to life with period precision. For modern readers, this isn't merely historical curiosity, it's a window into what educated American children were absorbing at the turn of the century: a belief that stories could build character, that history was heroic, and that reading was both duty and delight.
