Hard Guy

Salesman Frederick Marden doesn't pick up hitchhikers. But there's something about this one - the posture, the confidence - that makes him brake. The stranger introduces himself as Mike Eagen, member of the Strato Rovers, a nebulous group of sky-pirates who steal only from criminals and answer to no earthly authority. As they drive toward the city, Eagen spins tales of daring raids and a vendetta against a villain called the Black Hornet. The conversation hums with the electric certainty of a young man who has never been told no. Marden, a practical man of roads and quotas, finds himself half-entertained, half-disturbed by the grandeur of it all. The Strato Rovers, Eagen insists, are modern Robin Hoods - moral arbiters in a corrupt world. What follows is a gentle, self-aware twist that reframes everything: the swagger, the tough talk, the claimed exploits. It's a small, perfect joke about the stories we tell ourselves and the gap between fantasy and the mundane adult world.
