Greenstone Door

William Satchell

In 1830s New Zealand, a young English boy watches his world burn. After his father's death during the sack of Te Kuma pa, Cedric Tregarthen is taken in by the trader Purcell and the Maori chief Te Waharoa, beginning a life suspended between two worlds. Raised among the Maori with his foster sister Puhi-Huia and his friend Rangiora, Cedric discovers an underground kingdom of stone figures in a secret limestone cave, where the three children swear the Tatau Pounamu, an oath to close the Greenstone Door between their peoples. But history has other plans. As the Treaty of Waitangi unravels and colonial forces reshape the land, the boys must navigate an adult world of shifting allegiances, dispossession, and the slow violence of empire. Satchell writes with the tenderness of memory and the ache of hindsight, rendering Cedric's dual perspective as both participant and elegist. The novel offers something rare: a 19th-century attempt to imagine genuine friendship across cultural lines, even as it reckons with the impossibility of that dream.
