Goethe's Faust

Goethe's 'Faust' is a tragic play in two parts, first published in 1808, that explores the themes of ambition, desire, and the human condition through the story of a disillusioned scholar, Faust, who makes a pact with the devil, Mephistopheles. This work is considered Goethe's magnum opus and a cornerstone of German literature, blending philosophical inquiry with poetic form. The first part focuses on Faust's quest for meaning and fulfillment, leading to his tragic relationship with Gretchen and his eventual downfall. The second part, completed in 1831 and published posthumously, shifts to broader social and philosophical themes, marking a significant evolution in Goethe's exploration of human experience.
