God and My Neighbour

The Strand, at dusk. A man walks through London asking questions that polite society considers settled. This is not a distant polemic but a confession from someone who once believed and cannot anymore. Robert Blatchford was branded an "infidel" by the faithful, and rather than flinch from the word, he makes it the starting point for something more honest than the orthodoxy he abandoned. He walks through the streets observing the gap between what Christ taught and what Christians do, and finds the distance unbearable. The book is a sustained argument that traditional Christian ethics often contradict the essence of Jesus's own words, that religious institutions prioritize power over compassion, and that morality need not depend on divine command. Written in a conversational, searching tone that feels remarkably modern despite its Victorian frame, it advocates for rational ethics and social justice as the true inheritance of any spiritual impulse. For readers curious about the long tradition of freethinking critique, or anyone who has ever felt the ache of losing faith while retaining its moral urgency.
